Women in Aviation Chicago’s Leading Edge Chapter was founded in October, 2009 and serves the Chicagoland area. We are a Chapter of Women in Aviation, International, a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to providing networking, education, mentoring and scholarship opportunities for women (and men) who are striving for challenging and fulfilling careers in the aviation and aerospace industries.

The Chapter was founded by an FedEx  Captain and an Assistant Chief Pilot at Lewis University.  It’s been going strong and growing ever since.  Chapter members have been able to host annual outreach events such as the Sky’s the Limit: Interactive Aviation Camp for Girls in which about 100 high school girls annually learn about everything aviation has to offer.  We are also several years into our annual fundraising event in which we have raised thousands that have provided deserving applicants with the funding necessary to attend the annual Women in Aviation Conference, financing towards their pilot certificates and valuable equipment needed for flight training.

WAI is dedicated to the encouragement and advancement of women in all aviation career fields and interests. Our 7,000+ membership includes astronauts, airline pilots, corporate pilots, maintenance technicians, air traffic controllers, business owners, educators, journalists, flight attendants, high school and university students, air show performers, airport managers, enthusiasts and many others.

We provide year-round resources to assist women in aviation and to encourage young women to consider aviation as a career. WAI also offers educational outreach programs to educators, aviation industry members and young people nationally and internationally.  In addition, WAI promotes public understanding of the accomplishments and contributions of women in aviation.
