Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer with Chicago’s Leading Edge Chapter of Women in Aviation, International

Since the creation of our Chapter in 2009, our volunteers have been our heart and soul.  Volunteers from all over the Chicago area have helped to make us the most recognized organization for women in the aviation industry in our community.

Our chapter has many opportunities for members to reach out and give back to future generations, including:

  • Fundraising event each spring to raise money for the scholarships we offer annually
  • Outreach event each September entitled the Sky’s the Limit Interactive Camp for Girls
  • Membership drives in which we attend air shows and career fairs to get the word out about our great organization

All aviation interests, skills and experience are welcome to share in our passion for encouraging and educating future female’s in the industry!

Current Volunteer Opportunities

April is National Volunteer Month and Chicago’s Leading Edge has some great volunteer opportunities! We are looking for help with the following events. If something piques your interest, please let us know! Volunteering is a great way give back to the aviation community and a fun way to represent Chicago’s Leading Edge!

  • March 20th: Evanston High School – Aviation Day & Aerospace Career Expo, 1pm-3pm
  • April 18th: East Aurora High School –  STEM-A-Palooza, 10am-2pm
  • April 23rd: Hamilton Elementary in Chicago (Lake View) – 7th Annual Paper Airplane Invitational, 9am-12pm
  • April 25th: Bessie Coleman Fly Over at the Lincoln Cemetery in Chicago, 12pm-4pm

Thanks in advance for all your hard work! Please let us know if you have any questions!

What are we looking for?

Pre-Event help:

Volunteer Coordinator – someone to help manage the volunteers that sign up to make sure they have all the information that they need to help us

– Marketing and Community Outreach – this is to help spread the word about registering for our unit.  We have a list of schools that we normally reach out to but are always looking for more ideas or contacts (such as Girl Scout troops since they have an Aviation badge to work on!)

Eventbrite Management – someone that will help update our event site, keep tabs on questions that come in from registrations and send out reminders before the event to cut down on the number of no-shows cause, well, they forgot! (I know, you could forget about an invite to day like this!)

Donations – this would not only be trying to find sponsors or donors to offset the costs of running this event but possibly raffle prizes that we could offer the girls at the end of the day

Backback “fillers” – who doesn’t like free stuff! Many of the airlines and aviation-related companies usually have marketing materials that they bring to their conferences or career event.  If you have contacts within your company or are willing to reach out to them, we would greatly appreciate it!

Event Day help:

Registration table – getting the girl signed in quickly so we stay on schedule is always a challenge so help is needed

Photography – this would be both to walk around and take event photos but also to help with staged photos as we look in to getting a backdrop or GIAD frame for the girls to take photos with

Lunch – helping to pick up and set up lunch for the event

Social Media – what better way to get attention to our chapter and our event than to have someone to “live post and tweet” about the seminars that day with photos!

Seminar Volunteers – looking for Leads and Volunteers for each grouping:

Pre-Flight (55min)

Dispatch class (25min)

Flight Simulators (25min) – This class will be combined with the Dispatch class so that the girls can be split into two smaller groups for more hands-on time and less waiting around time

ATC Lab (55min)

Westwind tour (25min)

A&P Introduction (25min) – This class will be combined with the Westwind tour so that the girls can be split into two smaller groups for more hands-on time and less waiting around time

Career panel (55min) – This seminar was listed as one of the favorites last year! So we are hoping to get speakers from various career backgrounds again (we had a doctor, lawyer, pilot, flight attendant) but this time, we will have a quick powerpoint for each speaker to create (5min tops!) with photos as the girls really want to see photos of you in action

Aerodynamics hands-on learning (55min)- I will have cadets from Civil Air Patrol coming back to run this hands-on learning class

For events like this to continue to be a HUGE success, we really need your help!  Please click on this link to sign up:
